Enamelled glass: Zebra Head (W x H: 19 x 42 cm)
This enamelled work of a zebra was made from a photo made on one of our visits to Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa.
After printing the photo on paper a piece of float glass was cut to match the whole picture.
The enamel was mixed with pure vinegar. The outer lines of all the black stripes were drawn on the glass and put in the kiln for the first time.
The second step was to apply the grisaille. The same colour of enamel was mixed with 50% water and 50% vinegar. The mixture was then applied to the whole plate, quickly wiped with a badger hair brush to leave as few stripes as possible.
Then the details were created. For the lighter areas more grisaille was taken away than for the darker areas. Then the piece went into the kiln for a second time.
The third and last step was to fill in the black stripes of the zebra, again with the same colour enamel but now only mixed with water. And then the piece was once again put in the kiln.
Enamelled glass: Leopard Head (W x H: 21 x 20 cm)
The work of the leopard was made in a similar process.
The picture was taken in the Balule Game Reserve in South Africa.
Only this time the last step was to fill in the eyes with a yellow colour, to give more expression to the eyes. Again the colour was mixed only with water.
